Burnetts of northern Aberdeenshire, northern Scotland (R-M269P)
This is a thinly represented Burnett family line, there being only five Y‑DNA testers and none of them a Big Y. Three separate families are recorded, two of which trace back to Scotland. One is documented back to John Burnett, born 1700, who married Elizabeth Chapman in 1726 in Fordyce, near the northern coast of Banffshire. John’s great‑grandson Edward was born in Ireland in 1847 and married in Belfast before moving later in life to England. His descendants emigrated to Canada in 1910.
The second Scottish family is traced back to George Burnett, who married Elizabeth Adam in Aberdeen in 1795. George was born in Kirktown of Auchterless, about 25 miles south of Fordyce. His father was James Burnett, and some of his descendants remain in the Aberdeenshire area.
A third family traces back to Matthew Burnett, born 1721, who died in 1790 in Martin County, North Carolina.
No connection has yet been made between the two known Scottish families of John Burnett and James Burnett, nor between them and the North Carolina family. A Big Y test for these testers would show roughly how and when they connect. It would require at least one tester from each of the three lines to upgrade.
Major Haplogroup: Descendants of this paternal line share the major haplogroup R‑M269, also known as R1b. R‑M269 is one of the most common haplogroups in the western world. Because none of the five testers has yet taken a Big Y test, no subordinate haplogroups / SNPs have been identified.
Y‑DNA‑verified Paternal Ancestors
From the family trees of our testers, the paternal ancestors listed below are confirmed members of this paternal line. If your Burnett ancestor is listed below, it means you also descend from this paternal Burnett line. Living ancestors are not included.
