Descendants of Fleming S Burnett (R‑M269B)
Descendants of this paternal line have long believed themselves to descend from Burnett of Leys. However, Y‑DNA testing has revealed this line is likely descended from James Bartlett (1760‑1823) of Patrick County Virginia. He or one of his sons appears to have been the father of Fleming S Burnett, from whom all the Burnetts in this line descend. Fleming’s situation is what is termed an “NPE” or non‑paternal event. This occurs when a man’s surname doesn’t match the surnames of his Y‑DNA matches. It often occurs from birth out of wedlock, but it can also occur when a man changes his name or is adopted and the adoptive parents change a boy’s surname. Descendants of three different sons of Fleming Burnett have taken the Y‑DNA test and their results match each other and to Bartlett descendants [There are also testers named Hill in the results. It is believed these Hill’s are also descended from Bartlett’s.], including a descendant of James Bartlett of Patrick County Virginia.
The earliest records of Fleming S Burnett appear in the Scott County Virginia archives in 1828 when Fleming purchased some items at an estate sale and soon after married Elizabeth Cox. Fleming and Elizabeth had 8 sons and one daughter. The marriage record of Fleming and Elizabeth’s son Cornelius D Burnett lists Fleming’s birthplace as Patrick County Virginia. In 1808, when Fleming was born, Patrick County was a hotbed of Burnetts, most of whom descended from Jeremiah Burnett Sr (ca. 1730‑ ca.1816) and Isaac Burnett (ca. 1735‑1803). Jeremiah and Isaac Burnett are known descendants of a large Burnett family line, R‑M269‑A, the Burnetts of Hanover County, Virginia. Fleming’s descendants do not match this paternal line. Jeremiah Burnett (Jr), son of Jeremiah Sr, witnessed the last will and testament of James Bartlett in Patrick County in 1823. The two men both lived on the Smith River in Patrick County and were neighbors.
There are very few records of the daughters of these Patrick County Burnetts, but it is likely that Fleming’s mother was a Burnett who bestowed the Burnett name on her son Fleming. Autosomal DNA matches between Fleming’s descendants and the descendants of Jeremiah Burnett suggest Fleming’s mother was probably a granddaughter of Jeremiah Burnett Sr, but Isaac and Jeremiah shared a lot of autosomal DNA as evidenced by the wealth of matches between their descendants, so it is impossible to say for sure. Fleming’s descendants are also autosomal matches to the descendants of James Bartlett.
Major Haplogroup
Descendants of this paternal line share the major haplogroup R‑M269, aka R1b. Because this was the 2nd R1b sub‑group paternal line found in the Burnett Y‑DNA Project, it is labeled as and referred to as “R‑M269B” in the project. R‑M269 is one of the most common haplogroups in the western world.
A couple more recent haplogroups within this paternal line have been identified through Big Y testing. R‑BY55471 dated 1251 (+/‑80 years) is the SNP shared by both Burnett and Bartlett testers. It is important to note that the only Bartlett tester who has upgraded to the Big Y 700 is one based in the UK. His earliest known ancestor is Thomas Bartlett, who was born in 1585 in Devon, England. There are several other Bartlett testers, including some who trace to Colonial Virginia who have not upgraded to the Big Y 700. It is expected that their upgrade would yield a much more recent haplogroup. The other SNP, R‑FT34463, is a very recent branch dated 1904 (+/‑80 years) shared only by two brothers who descend from Fleming S Burnett.
Origins
As mentioned, descendants are a Y‑DNA match to a Bartlett who has traced his lineage to Thomas Bartlett (1585‑1645) in Devon, England. This suggests that the paternal origin of this American Burnetts line was likely England. Documentary evidence for the connection between Thomas Bartlett and James Bartlett has not yet been found but is proven by Y‑DNA results.
